File Menu

The File menu contains commands that allow you to create, open, save, and print Progress Reports. It also contains the Preferences command that lets you customize MUSIC LESSONS II.

The File menu appears in both the Drill window and the Progress Report window. This is the File menu in the Drill Window:

This is the File menu in the Progress Report window:

Note: Items in the File menu can appear in an enabled state (black) or a disabled state (gray), depending on whether or not a Progress Report window is open.

New Progress Report

When you choose New Progress Report, a dialog box will appear asking you to type your name.

The name you type is permanently attached to the Progress Report. This name will always be visible on the Progress Report and cannot be changed. Click OK, and the Progress Report window will open.

Open Progress Report

When you choose Open Progress Report, the Open dialog box appears, where you select the Progress Report you want to open.

Progress reports must have the ".ml2" file name extension to appear in the Open File dialog.

Close Progress Report

This item closes the active progress report. If there are unsaved scores, a dialog box will appear asking if you want to save them.

Save Progress Report

This item saves any unsaved scores (called Session Scores in the Progress Report window) to the active Progress Report and resets the session scores to zero. If this is the first time today's scores have been saved, a date line for today will be added to the upper panel of the Progress Report window. If other scores from today have been saved already, the new scores will be merged with today's other scores. Saved scores appear in the Progress Report window both under the date they were saved and as part of the Cumulative Scores.

Save Progress Report As

Use this command to save a file for the first time or to save the active Progress Report to a new file. The number of student Progress Report files is limited only by disk space; you could store thousands on a hard disk drive.

Note: Progress reports are saved with the ".ml2" file name extension. If you forget to add the ".ml2" extension to the file name, MUSIC LESSONS II will add it for you.

Progress Summary

When Progress Summary is checked, the Progress Report window will display a summary of the scores for each drill.

Print Setup/Page Setup

The Print Setup command on Windows and the Page Setup command on Macintosh display the standard Print/Page Setup dialog box.

Print

You can print Progress Report and Help
windows. When printing Progress Report windows, MUSIC LESSONS II prints the scores displayed in the lower panel of the window. When printing Help windows, MUSIC LESSONS II prints the information displayed in the right panel of the Help window.

Preferences

This item opens the Preferences dialog box, where you can customize the program settings used by MUSIC LESSONS II. There are eight pages in the Preferences dialog that you can access by clicking one of the eight tab controls at the top of the dialog box. For a detailed discussion of each page of the Preferences dialog, see pages 31-40.

If you click the Permanent button, the settings on the current page will be marked to be saved to the Preferences file. Click the tab control to change to other pages. Be sure to click the Permanent button on every page you want saved.

If you click the OK button, the dialog will close, and the settings for any pages you marked as Permanent will be saved to the Preferences file and will be used every time you start the program. The settings for any pages not marked Permanent will be used for the remainder of this session and then forgotten when you quit from the program.

If you click the Cancel button, the Preferences dialog will close and all changes will be forgotten, including those marked permanent.

Exit/Quit

The Exit command on Windows and the Quit command on Macintosh quit MUSIC LESSONS II. If there are unsaved scores, a dialog box will appear with four choices.

Don't Save - Quits without saving any scores.

Cancel - Cancels the Quit command and returns to the MUSIC LESSONS II program.

New File - Opens the New File dialog box, where you can create a new Progress Report file.

Existing File - Opens the Open dialog box, so you can select an existing Progress Report where the scores will be saved.
