JAZZ User Guide Lesson 4 - A Mixed Bag[Listen] In Lesson Four you'll learn how to mix styles within a song and how to play selected measures and selected choruses. You'll use the Semicircle Blues song from Lesson Three as your starting point. If you saved it, open it now. Otherwise, you'll have to recreate it. Open Semicircle Blues
Choose the Open command from the File menu. If another song is active, you will be asked if you want to save it; respond appropriately. When the Open File dialog appears, navigate to the directory where you saved Semicircle Blues, then select the Semicircle Blues file, and click the Open button. Save As Mixed Bag Blues Before you start changing styles, save Semicircle Blues with a new name, the Mixed Bag Blues.
Choose the Save As command from the File Menu. When the Save As dialog appears, name the song Mixed Bag Blues, and click the Save button. The Mixed Bag Blues is now an exact copy of the Semicircle Blues file with six choruses modulating through the keys of C-G-D-Bb-F-C. You're going to have each chorus play in a different style. Here's the lesson plan:
Chorus 1. Jazz 4/4 Swing No changes. Chorus 2. Jazz 4/4 Ballad Select measures 13-24
When the Change Styles dialog appears, set the Style to Jazz 4/4, Substyle to Ballad, Piano Voicings to Closed, Instruments to All, and This Chorus Only to 1. Click OK.
Chorus 3. Latin Bossa Nova Select measures 25-36
When the Change Styles dialog appears, set the Style to Latin, Substyle to Bossa Nova, Piano Voicings to Open, Instruments to All, and This Chorus Only to 1. Click OK.
Chorus 4. Latin Samba Select measures 1-12
When the Change Styles dialog appears, set the Style to Latin, Substyle to Samba, Piano Voicings to Open, Instruments to All, and This Chorus Only to 2. Click OK.
Chorus 5. Slow 4 Two Beat Swing Select measures 13-24 Click the Change Styles tool When the Change Styles dialog appears, set the Style to Slow 4, Substyle to Two Beat Swing, Piano Voicings to Closed, Instruments to All, and This Chorus Only to 2. Click OK.
Chorus 6. Mixed Styles In chorus 6 each instrument will be in a different style. You'll need to use the Change Styles dialog three times, once each for the piano, bass, and drums. Select Measures 25-36 Piano to Slow 4 Two Beat Swing
JAZZ Bass to Slow 4 12/8 Blues
Drums to Jazz 4/4 Ballad
Play Modes Until now, you've clicked the Play tool and played the entire song. There are three other playback modes depending on whether any measures are selected, and whether the Alt key (Windows) or the Option key (Macintosh) is pressed down when you click the Play tool. Here's a table that explains the play modes.
Let's try all four play modes with the Mixed Bag Blues. Play the entire song Click the Play tool When you listen to the song, each of the six blues choruses will be in a different style. Play a specific chorus Press down the Alt (Option) key and then click the Play tool If you hold down the Alt key (Windows) or the Option key (Macintosh) and then click the Play tool, the Play Chorus Number dialog will appear. Set the Chorus Number to 2 and click OK. You'll hear all thirty-six measures from Chorus 2 of the song form; that would be blues choruses four through six.
Play selected measures in chorus 1 Select measures 25-36 and then click the Play tool If any measures are selected when you click the Play tool, MiBAC JAZZ will play only the selected measures. Because measures 25-36 were selected, you'll hear those measures from Chorus 1 of the song form; that would be blues chorus three, the one in the Bossa Nova style. Play selected measures in a specific chorus Select measures 25-36 and then press down the Alt (Option) key and click the Play tool When the Play Chorus Number dialog appears, set the Chorus Number to 2 and click OK. You'll hear measures 25-36 from Chorus 2 of the song form; that would be blues chorus six, the one with each instrument in a different style.
