JAZZ User Guide Lesson 2 - The Twelve Jazz Styles [Listen]
In Lesson Two you'll write a song in each of the twelve MiBAC JAZZ styles. The Style dialog lets you choose between the four main styles, each of which has a slow, a medium, and a fast substyle. Combine the four main styles with the three substyles and you get the twelve jazz styles available in MiBAC JAZZ.
Style and Tempo When you write a song, MiBAC JAZZ checks the tempo setting to determine which substyle to use.
Substyle Tempo Limits The tempo boundaries for each substyle are determined by the settings in the Substyle Tempo Limits dialog. You can open this dialog using the Substyle Tempo Limits command in the Settings menu. The default settings are shown below. We'll assume these tempo boundaries are in effect for the rest of this chapter.
Following are brief descriptions of each of the twelve styles. The default tempo range for each substyle is shown in parentheses. All styles use two chords per measure except where noted. If two chords are used in a measure, the slow tempo substyles will play both chords. Other styles may play one or both of the chords. Jazz 4/4 Substyles

Slow 4 Substyles
Jazz 3/4 Substyles
Common Elements To write and play each of the twelve substyles as quickly and easily as possible, let's reuse the same song form and chord progression each time. That way you'll be able to write a new substyle just by changing the tempo. You'll slightly modify the procedure used in Lesson One by changing the order of Steps 1-3 and adding Step 4a. Here's the lesson plan:
Steps 1 and 2 have to be done only once and will apply to all styles. Step 3 needs to be done four times, once for each of the four main styles. Steps 4-6 need to be done twelve times, once for each of the substyles. Set the form
Set the Chorus Length to 12 measures. All other settings can be left unchanged. Click OK.
Type the chords You'll use a new chord progression that's liberally sprinkled with ii-V chords. Press the Tab key, or use the Arrow keys, to move from measure to measure. When using two chords in a measure, type exactly one space between the chords. Using more than one space will cause an error. The chords will appear to be positioned over beats one and two, but they will be performed on beats one and three.
You're now ready to write the three Jazz 4/4 substyles. Jazz 4/4 Substyles: Ballad, Swing, Bebop The following chart shows the default tempo ranges for the three substyles of the Jazz 4/4 main style. When you click the Write tool, MiBAC JAZZ checks the tempo setting and then chooses the appropriate substyle.

Slow 4 Four Chord BalladThis is a special style where every one measure of the actual song is represented by two measures on the screen. Beats one and two of the actual song measure will be an odd numbered screen measure. Beats three and four of the actual song measure will be an even numbered screen measure. For example, measure four of the song will occupy measure 7 (beats one and two) and measure 8 (beats three and four) on the screen. You need to write the substyle at a fast tempo and then change to a slower tempo for playback. The actual playback tempo will be half the screen tempo. Change the tempo, write, play, and save the song Set the tempo to 300 (although it could be any tempo between 280-500). Click the Write tool in the Main Toolbar. Then, before you play this song, you need to change the tempo. The actual playback tempo will be half of that shown on the screen. For an actual playback tempo of 80, you have to set the screen tempo to 160. Click the Play tool to play the song. Save the song as "Slow4 Four Chord Ballad.mjz." You're now ready to write the three Jazz 3/4 substyles. JAZZ 3/4 Substyles: Ballad, Swing, Bebop The following chart shows the default tempo ranges for the three substyles of the Jazz 3/4 main style.
