Click the start button to begin recording MIDI data. You may see hundreds of MIDI Clock and Active Sensing messages.

MidiMon window with MIDI Clock messages

Click the Stop button to stop receiving MIDI data. Click the Clear button to clear the screen.

The MIDI data is arranged in five columns. The Status column indicates the type of MIDI message. The Data1 and Data2 columns have different meanings for different types of MIDI messages.

  1. Time of event in Milliseconds since program was opened.
  2. Status - the type of MIDI message (90 is Note On)
  3. Data 1 - for a Note On message, middle C is note number 60
  4. Data 2 - for a Note On message velocity refers to how loud or soft the note was played. A velocity of zero is a Note Off.
  5. Comment - English for the Status

You can filter Timing Clock and Active Sensing out by checking the two filter checkboxes near the top of the window.

With filters checked, play an ascending C Major scale starting on middle C. When finished click the Stop button.

The MIDI data should look something like this.

The Data1 column lists the notes of the C Major scale.

  • C = 60
  • D = 62
  • E = 64
  • F = 65
  • G = 67
  • A = 69
  • B = 71
  • C = 72

The Data2 column indicates the velocity (loud-soft). A velocity of zero turns a note off.

Here's the C Major scale without filtering Timing Clock and Active Sensing

If you enable the Echo to MIDI Out checkbox, anything you play on your MIDI keyboard will be instantly echoed to your MIDI Output device. If your output device is another MIDI synthesizer or sound card, the echo should be virtually instantaneous. If your output device is a software synthesizer like Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth there will be a slight delay between your fingers and the sound.
