The logical place to begin talking about
the study of music is to study some programs for beginners. Many of
these programs are targeted toward school age children and serve simply
as an introduction to music fundamentals. But some programs extend the
learning process into more advanced territory. And these are well suited
to adults. One such program - MiBAC Music Lessons - is a collection
of 11 drills in different skill levels that start with basics, such
as the names of notes, and take you into advanced topics. The program's
interface is clear and easy to use, and it encourages you to move ahead
at your own pace. You can quickly switch from one topic to the next,
so if you get tired of working on scales, for example, you can try a
little ear training as a change of pace... Overall, MiBAC Music Lessons
is a great tool for honing your musical skills. And the program is suitable
for a wide range of users - from grade school students up through teenagers
and adults.

Music Lessons does a great job of teaching
basic music principles such as note names, circle of fifths, scale theory,
intervals, ear training - all in an interactive format that even grades
the student and prints out a progress report. Work (don't just play)
with the [program], and you will be greatly rewarded.

MiBAC's...teaching approach is well thought-out.
If there's a young person in your house who wants to learn to play music
from the ground up - or if you fall into that category yourself- MiBAC's
lessons are a good buy.

...well-designed comprehensive music theory
and ear training program.
American
Music Teacher Magazine, Dec/Jan 1994/1995
Music Lessons...is a highly useful tool
for teaching the following musical skills: note names, circle of fifths,
key signatures, modes, jazz scales, scale degrees, intervals, note durations,
and ear-training in interval and scale recognition. Music Lessons has
an easy-to-use format that allows students to move at their own pace,
get onscreen help, check answers, and even ask the computer to show
them the answers if they are mystified.
I found that in the case of concepts such as key signatures and note
names, my students stayed with drill and practice longer and with more
interest at the computer than they do when I drill them on these same
matters during lessons. The motivation comes from the cumulative "game" score, which they can see immediately on the screen - and from the fact
that they are on their own, without the sense that someone is impatiently
waiting for the correct answer.
One of my students learned note durations in 15 minutes - after I had
tried explaining it for a year.
The program fosters student independence;...It is also possible to adjust
the level of difficulty for each student, allowing the program to function
equally well for beginners and for advanced musicians who want to brush
up on their music theory.

MiBAC Music Lessons is a software program
flexible enough to help any users grow, from students just learning
to read music to those working with subtle music theory. [Music Lessons
is] built around a piano model, but [has] carryover applications to
any instrument
The user's guide provides clear documentation, and a reference manual
explains theoretical concepts in a detailed yet accessible manner.
Technology & Learning Magazine, Nov/Dec 1994
Wide variety of music-reading and ear-training
exercises; excellent Help function and MIDI support.
a valuable learning tool for beginning and intermediate musicians.
[With] a Help menu that doubles as a miniature music theory reference,
even experienced musicians may find Music Lessons useful.
MiBAC's package is well executed and complete and should prove valuable
to a wide variety of users. Its MIDI support is up-to-date, and it runs
on any Mac from a Plus on up.
MiBAC's Music Lessons gets an A plus.
