The answers

General
I'm
getting an invalid registration number error.
The registration
number must be typed exactly. Don't confuse "0" (zero) with
the letter "O", or "1" (one) with the letter l.

How
many student records can I keep?
The number
of student record files is limited only by disk space. You could save
thousands of student records on a hard drive.

Is
a site license for MUSIC LESSONS II available?
Yes. A site
license for up to 40 computers in a single building includes two copies
of the manual, the retail version of the software, a special site license
disk, and license forms. The Preferences dialog and the Set Custom Level
dialog are password protected in the site license version. For current
prices, contact us by one of the methods listed in Appendix D, page
71.

Does
the site license version of MUSIC LESSONS II work over a network?
MUSIC LESSONS
II was not written to be a shared application where multiple students
can use a single copy of the program simultaneously from the server.
Our recommendation is that you install a full copy of MUSIC LESSONS
II on the local hard drive of each workstation. If the lab workstations
do not have local hard drives, you will need to create multiple copies
of the program on the server and check each copy out to a specific workstation.
Student records can be saved to a common directory on the server.

I'm
getting a font error.
You will
need to reinstall the program. Move any progress reports or custom levels
you want to save out of the MUSIC LESSONS II folder. Then, delete the
folder and reinstall the program from the CD-ROM.

The
music staff is not drawing with the correct font.

Make sure
the MusiLess font is installed in your fonts folder, usually C:\Windows\Fonts.
If it is not yet installed, copy it from the "Manual Install" folder on the CD-ROM to the Fonts folder. See the User's Guide page
10.

Make sure
the "MUSIC LESSONS II Fonts" suitcase is in the Fonts folder
inside the System Folder. If it's not there, you can copy it from the
CD-ROM. See the User's Guide page 13.

MUSIC
LESSONS II is acting strangely.
Close MUSIC
LESSONS II and delete the preferences file. That file is called ML2Prefs.bin
on Windows and is located in the Windows folder. On Macintosh, that
file is called MUSIC LESSONS II Preferences and is located in the Preferences
folder inside the System folder.

Notes
played on my MIDI synthesizer appear on the screen, but I don't hear
anything.
If the notes
appear on the screen but there is no sound, it means that MIDI IN is
working, and MIDI OUT is the problem. You may need to use the Use MIDI
Echo setting. See pages 33-34. Make sure Use Sound is checked in the
Options menu. See page 25.

Try a different
MIDI Output driver. See pages 41-47.

Can
I use a MIDI controller?
Yes. You
may need to turn on the Use MIDI Echo setting. If your controller is
a transposing instrument, you may need to set the MIDI Input Transpose
value. See page 34.

Can I use
the printer port for MIDI?
We recommend
that you use the modem port if possible. If you must use the printer
port, here's how. Go to the MIDI Setup page of the Preferences dialog.
There will be different choices on the page, depending on which driver
you are using.
MiBAC MIDI
Routines
Choose MiBAC
MIDI Drivers and then select the Printer Port. See page 54.
FreeMIDI
Quit MUSIC
LESSONS II and then open the FreeMIDI Setup application. The settings
you need are found in the Preferences command in the File menu and the
Interface Settings in the MIDI menu. See page 54.
OMS
Click the
OMS MIDI Setup button and choose the printer port. See page 55.
MIDI Manager
Open the
PatchBay application and double click the Apple MIDI Driver button.
Another dialog box will open, allowing you to choose the printer port.
See page 56.

How
do I get MIDI to work on my PowerBook?
The problems
we've encountered have been related to an internal modem and to the
AppleTalk setting. If you have an internal modem, the modem port connector
on the back of the PowerBook may not function. There is usually a control
panel, like PortShare, that can enable and disable the internal modem.
You may need to experiment with the AppleTalk setting in the Chooser.
You'll have to restart your computer to test each change. We routinely
demonstrate MUSIC LESSONS II using MIDI on a PowerBook G3 that does
not have an internal modem.
[Top]
How
do I use QuickTime sounds with my MIDI controller?
If you're
using MiBAC MIDI Drivers or Apple's MIDI Manager, you'll need to turn
on QuickTime output on the MIDI Setup page of the Preferences dialog.
FreeMIDI and OMS can send MIDI output directly to QuickTime. See page
34.
