MIDI Controller with MIDI Sound Module

[Hardware] [Setup 1] [Setup 2] [Setup 3] [Setup 4] Setup 5-Win

Caution: Make sure your computer is powered off before making these connections.

In this setup you have both a MIDI controller and a MIDI sound module connected to your computer. This setup is similar to Setup 4, except that the sounds will be produced by a MIDI sound module rather than by a sound card. Because the MIDI controller has no sounds of its own, you'll use the sound module to produce sounds when you play the controller. To do this, you'll need to check the Use MIDI Echo check box on the MIDI page of the Preferences dialog. Then whenever MUSIC LESSONS II receives MIDI data from the controller, it will echo it to the sound module.

You'll need two MIDI cables: one connects your MIDI controller to your computer; the other connects the computer to the sound module. Notes played on the controller are sent to the computer following this cable path: MIDI OUT on the controller goes to MIDI IN on the MIDI interface. Notes played by MUSIC LESSONS II are sent to the sound module following this cable path: MIDI OUT on the MIDI interface goes to MIDI IN on the sound module.

For this setup, the driver settings on the MIDI page of the Preferences dialog might look like this:

Both Input and Output drivers must be specified. You'll use a MIDI driver for both Input and Output. MIDI drivers often have "MIDI," "external," or "MPU-401" in their names. If more than one driver is listed, there is no harm in trying them all; one should work. The names of the drivers may be different on your system.

You can answer questions by playing the controller, and MUSIC LESSONS II will play sounds through the sound module. To hear them, you'll need to connect headphones or speakers to the sound module.
